The future: it's our responsibility


F&C Investment Trust is the world's oldest collective investment scheme and we've been helping investors since 1868. As stewards of shareholder assets, our responsibility is not only to grow capital and income for our clients, but to support positive change as well.

The 2020 F&C Investment Trust Lecture Series returned to the Guildhall in March, and took a closer look at responsibility and the actions we can take as individuals, investors and asset managers to secure a more sustainable future.

Alastair Fothergill

Series Producer of BBC's The Blue Planet, and creator of Our Planet, a landmark series for Netflix

In his almost 30-year tenure at the BBC Natural History Unit, Alastair Fothergill OBE was responsible for the landmark series The Blue Planet, Planet Earth and Frozen Planet with Sir David Attenborough. Since 2006, he has also worked for Disney, directing six wildlife movies for its Disneynature label. In 2012, he set up Silverback Films with Keith Scholey, producing The Hunt series for the BBC and Our Planet for Netflix – the first natural history Netflix Original Documentary Series. A fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and recipient of its gold medal, Alastair engages in a global conversation about how to protect and preserve our world.

Hannah Fry

Mathematician, TED speaker, author, co-host of The Curious Cases of Rutherford & Fry and presenter of the 2019 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures

Dr Hannah Fry is an Associate Professor in the Mathematics of Cities at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis at UCL. Her research applies to a wide range of social problems and questions, from shopping and transport to urban crime, riots and terrorism. Hannah's mathematical expertise has led to the development of several BBC documentaries, and she is the co-host of the Radio 4 show, The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry. Hannah has also authored a number of books, including two popular maths books: The Mathematics of Love: Patterns, Proofs, and the Search for the Ultimate Equation, and, The Indisputable Existence of Santa Claus. Her latest book is entitled, Hello World: How to be Human in the Age of the Machine, which was shortlisted for the prestigious Royal Society Book Prize. In December 2019, Hannah presented the popular Royal Institution Christmas Lectures – Secrets and lies: The hidden power of maths.

Vicki Bakhshi

Director in the Responsible Investment Team at BMO Global Asset Management, with experience as the Prime Minister's policy adviser on climate change

Vicki Bakhshi is a Director in the Responsible Investment team. She joined BMO Global Asset Management in November 2006, prior to which she spent five years in the UK government, including as the Prime Minister's policy adviser on climate change, and as a senior member of the team responsible for the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change. She also spent three years as a lead writer at the Financial Times, and two years as an economist at the Bank of England. Vicki chairs the UK Sustainable Investment and Finance Association's Leadership Committee, has served on the Board of the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change, and was also named by Financial News in 2013 as one of the top 100 influential women in finance in Europe. Vicki holds an MSc in Economics from Warwick University and a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University.

Established in 1868, the F&C Investment Trust is the world's oldest collective investment scheme. In 2018, the F&C Investment Trust Lecture series was launched to mark the 150th anniversary. The inaugural event, 'Investing Past, Present and future', featured Professor Yuval Harari, Paul Niven and Dr Eliza Filby, as they looked at the history of investing, future of mankind, and the next generation of investors.

Beatrice Hollond

Chairman, F&C Investment Trust

Beatrice Hollond has been on the F&C Investment Trust Board since 2017 and is excited to be taking on her new role as the Chairman in 2020. Beatrice spent 16 years at Credit Suisse Asset Management in Global Fixed Income and began her career as an Equity Analyst at Morgan Grenfell Asset Management.

Paul Niven

Fund Manager, F&C Investment Trust

The F&C Investment Trust has only had three fund managers over the past four decades. Paul Niven was appointed in 2014 after 18 years with the firm. Paul sets the Trust's investment policy, asset allocation and is supported by a team of investment professionals. In the 2018 lecture 'Investing Past, Present & Future', Paul gave insights into the history of investing, from the inception of the Trust to how far it's come in the past 150 years.
